Train itinerary suggestions: Rome to London

My husband and I would like to take a two week train trip from Rome to London beginning in late March. We plan to fly from London (where we currently live) to Rome, spend five days there, then work our way back to London via train. We have friends in Frankfurt, so we would like to make a three day stop there during our journey. Any suggestions on best routes and stops from Rome to London? I have been overwhelmed trying work this out using the various rail maps. Thanks!

Roland, It would help if you could provide a few locations that you might be interested in seeing. There are numerous possible routes, so it would be nice to narrow down the stops to places that you might want to visit. Cheers!

I am kind of confused also. I don't think you have to use a rail map. Just use one of the scheduling sites. Use bahn.de. Simply take a trainl from one town to the next. There isn't one huge route you would take. It is just a series of city to city.

Going out of Rome, your first big city will be Florence in about 2 hours. It's a city requiring a 3 day visit to see everything. Bologna is the next city north, followed by Verona. The train will then go due north into Innsbruck and its incredible mountains. Then, you've got Munich, which is worth a stop. Frankfurt is the next big city. When you leave Frankfurt, you'll go up the Rhine River Valley through cities like Bacharach and Koblenz to Cologne. At Cologne, you'll transfer trains going west to Brussels. From there, you'd go on to the Chunnel and into Britain. I've been to all of these cities except Bologna. Take a pick on which are worth your time.
