Train help/advice

Going on a 2-week trip through Italy and Switzerland.

Staying in Rome 4 nights, Florence 5, Monterosso 2, Gimmelwald 3, and Zurich 1 (in that order).

I anticipate trains from FCO-Rome, Rome-Florence, Florence-Siena/Tuscany, Florence-Monterosso, Monterosso-Interlaken, Interlaken-Gimmelwald, traveling on the lifts in the Berner Oberland, and finally Interlaken-Zurich.

What sounds best? point-to-point? An Italy pass and a Swiss pass? Some specialized pass for the B.O.? Any help would be appreciated.

Switzerland has some passes that are linked with one other country, but Italy isn't one of them. You would have to buy both an Italy pass and one of several kinds of Swiss passes.

Point-to-point tickets in Italy probably will be cheaper than a pass. Go to www.trenitalia.com, get a total cost for P2P tickets for your routes, and then compare that total to the cost of a pass plus seat reservation fees for trains that require them.

Some kind of Swiss pass probably would be a good investment. Click on the "Railpasses" tab at the top of the page and read all about them.
