Hello forum. I will be traveling from Glasgow Queens St station to Edinburgh Waverly station next week.
I've checked the National Rail website and there are off-peak trains every 10 min or so. The cost is £12.50 one-way.
My questions are:
- if I purchase an off-peak tix can I take any off peak train , or must I purchase a tix for a specific date/time?
- no where have I read that tixs need to be stamped or validated prior to boarding. Can you tell me if validation is required? (As one must in Italy for example)
Thank you for your help.
There is no validation (stamping of tickets) on trains in the UK. It is a practice that applies in some countries only.
Thank you very much Chris
Na,
You'll find your answers regarding, 'off-peak' tickets here: https://www.scotrail.co.uk/tickets/leisure?accordion=off-peak
Under the heading: When can I travel?
Thanks very much Priscilla
There will be barrier checks before you get to the platforms, in the form of ScotRail personnel or automatic barriers. If the ticket is not valid you probably won't get through until the ticket is back valid.
Glasgow QS operates mostly under the automatic barrier system as ScotRail is the only company that regularly uses it.
Thank you MC.
I don't know if you are locked in to rail, but express coach from Glasgow to Edinburgh runs about every 15 minutes and the ride takes about 1:20 at 7.50 GBP standard adult. My recollection is the coaches have under luggage compartments.

Edgar, thank you for pointing out this option. I viewed the rail site earlier today and discovered that there will be a rail strike on the day I plan to travel next week.
The bus may be the way to travel next week! Thank you
Now this (posted at 4 pm Scottish time today) says the rail strike for next week in Scotland has been cancelled . . .

Let's hope it's right!
HI Kim. Thanks very much for the update!
