Has anyone taken the train from Zagreb to Paris? I'm weighing the pros/cons of train vs. plane: cost savings vs. time, ease vs. hassle, etc.
The train will take a minimum or 18 hours with 4-5 changes for about €250. You can fly Easy Jet in 2 hours for about €33.
On the other hand, Zabreb to Paris is part of the old Orient Express. If you're feeling adventurous, want to experience an Agatha Christie novel and want some bragging rights take the train. If you want to get to Paris as quickly as possible fly.

http://www.seat61.com/Croatia.htm#London to Ljubljana & Zagreb Travel from Paris to Munich overnight by the City Night Line sleeper train 'Cassiopeia', leaving Paris Gare de l'Est at 20:20 and arriving in Munich at 07:16 next morning. This excellent train runs daily for most of the year, but only 4 times a week in winter. It runs on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays until 18 March 2010, then daily for the summer until 8 November 2010, then on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays again. : Good news, from 12 December 2010 onwards this train will run daily all year round. It has sleeping-cars (1, 2 & 3 bed compartments, standard with washbasin or deluxe with shower), 4 & 6-berth couchettes & ordinary seats, see the photos & information below. More pictures & information about this City Night Line train. Travel from Munich to Zagreb on a modern, air-conditioned EuroCity train, the "Sava", leaving Munich at 08:27 and arriving in Ljubljana at 14:31 and Zagreb at 17:10. An Austrian restaurant car is available from Munich to Villach (reached at 12:43), and a Serbian restaurant car is usually available between Villach and Zagreb. However, don't expect the Serbian restaurant to sell any hot food, just sandwiches, cheap beer and coffee. If you want a hot lunch, eat early in the Austrian restaurant. Note that although on paper there are through coaches Munich-Zagreb, in reality you may have to make a simple cross-platform change of train at Villach.
Would you take a Greyhound bus from Miami to New York only to experience the good old days of people travelling up and down I-95? If no, there is no reason for you to travel that far by train.
Yes, Mike, you do have to weigh all considerations, and it depends if you're traveling solo too. I myself have done part of this route you've got in mind. This summer I went from Paris-Vienna, with a transfer in Frankfurt, night train, solo, got into Vienna a little after 0900. Reservations for both legs cost 45 Euro, since the Paris-Frankfurt was in 1st class. Of course, I didn't reserve a couchette or a sleeper, which would've been more expensive. Based on Elaine's detailed information I would choose to go by train. That transfer at Munich Hbf. gives me enough time. Again, it also depends upon any time constraint you're operating under.
Go for it, take the train ! Years ago I took the train from Paris through Zagreb then down through (then) Yugloslavia through Skopje to Athens. It was fantastic. I was adopted by a wonderful Albanian family for most of the trip.
