I'm hoping to take the train from Vienna to Venice over a weekend in July. Any advice would be appreciated, specifically how far in advance should I purchase a ticket? Thanks.

By train and bus, this will be an 8.5hr. journey. First a train from Vienna to Villach on the border of Austria and Italy and then a 4.0hr bus ride from Villach to the Tronchetto (parking garage) in Venice.

You can take a direct night train that departs at 20:40 and arrives at 08:34. Book NOW on the Austrian Rail site or you'll be out of luck. Popular night trains sell out weeks in advance. If you travel during the day, you may still be able to get a discount fare if you book NOW. The best time to book any train would have been two months ago.
