Train from Vienna - Rome

Hello, All. Thanks in advance for the help.

When I was in Vienna 10 years ago, it was possible to buy one train ticket to Rome, and make stops/stays as long as you were on the same route. Example: We did Vienna to Venice, with 3 stops in Slovenia, all on one ticket, no extra charge. We also Did Munich-Vienna, with a free stop in Prien and Salzburg, no extra charge.

Are these tickets/rules still available?

We'd like to go Vienna-Salzburg-Slovenia-Venice-Rome. Can we still do that all on the same one way ticket? :)

Looking forward to your replies! Thanks! Chris

In Italy, you can do this on the Regionale (R) trains. These are the local trains. The runs take longer because there are more stops. You will change trains once or twice as the R trains stay within a region. You R train ticket shows the departure location, the destination, the class (1st or 2nd) and that's it. It's good for 6 months (I think). For example, you can ride from Venice to Florence and get off anywhere along the way and get back on a later train going in the same direction to your destination.

You can't do this on the Eurostar, AV or ICPlus trains. These all require a date, time, train number and seat reservation on your ticket. If you get off somewhere on the run and your train departs, your ticket could be toast. If you want multiple stops along the way on the higher-speed trains, you must have separate tickets to each location where you want to get off and visit. For example, if you wanted to get off at Padua and Bologna and Orvieto on your way to Rome, you would need separate tickets from and to each location. Plus, you would most likely change trains in Florence. Each ticket set would have specific departure times to which you must adhere.

Chris, this is a can do. Right now, the high-speed runs I see from Venice to Rome do not show a train change. Thus, you would need to buy a ticket from Venice to Florence and another ticket set from Florence to Rome (1hr. 40min).

It would be best to research where the train runs from Vienna will be coming through. Some runs will not go all of the way into Venice to the Santa Lucia station. Instead, you will change trains at Venezia Mestre. I'm attaching a sample schedule and you will see both Santa Lucia and Mestre.

CLICK HERE to see the schedule.

Once you begin looking up Venezia Mestre or Venezia Santa Lucia to Florence, you will see a few more runs.
