Okay train guru's. Can you help me figure out if it is feasible and not an all day excursion to go to Pisa from Vernazza. We will be in Cinque Terre for several days and thought we'd take the train to Pisa. We are picking up a car and driving on to Orvieto but didn't want to park the car and take the time to stop in Pisa on the way. Does anyone know how long it would take to drive from La Spezia to Orvieto? Thanks.
Vernazza-La Spezia-Pisa by train takes less than two hours. For detailed timetables, go to www.bahn.de. For fares as well as timetables, go to www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html.
For distance and driving time between La Spezia and Orvieto, go to either www.viamichelin.com or www.mappy.com.
I've driven from Siena to La Spezia, stopping in Pisa along the way for the obligatory photo shoot. Anyone who is planning on driving from the CT to Siena needs to know one thing: YOU MUST DRIVE FROM PISA TO SIENA VIA FLORENCE unless you don't care about time. It's a little out of the way as the crow flies to go through Florence, but it takes 2-3 times as long to drive through the countryside. The countryside is gorgeous, but if time is a factor then stay on the Autostrada.
I'm trying to remember how long it took us for that trip. I seem to remember it takes about 1.5 hours to drive from Pisa to La Spezia and around 1.5 hours from Siena to Pisa if you take the Autostrada. It took us 3-3.5 hours from Siena to Pisa on the back roads.
IMO, Pisa is not worth a special trip. If it is on the way, it's worth a two hour stop, unless you really need a cheesy photo of a loved one holding up the Tower. lol
