Train from Vernazza to Venice

My wife and I want to travel by train from Vernazza in the Cinque Terre to Venice in October. Can anyone give us some advice on the best route to take? Thanks for your help.

Check out bahn.de for schedules....www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html for schedules and prices. You'll have to make a couple of connections, at least, so best pick the fastest time that fits your particular schedule. You might be able to mix it in with a stop at Pisa to see the leaning tower, or Florence if you wish. On the Trenitalia site, you'll find that train fares are highest on the new AV trains, then, in descending order, ES, EC, ICplus, IC, and R for regional trains. Usually, the higher the price the faster the trip but, with a couple of transfers to make, and a couple of spots to choose to make them, that might not necessarily be the case.

Most runs from the CT to Venice go through Florence or Milan depending on where in the CT you depart. From La Spezia Centrale, most have a train change in Florence. However, a there are a few runs that route through Bologna. If you are willing to go early in the morning, the quickest run of the day departs La Spezia at 7:52am. The train is a regional to Bologna where you pick up the Eurostar to Venice. You arrive in Venice at 1:17pm. You have the whole afternoon in Venice. It also means that you have to depart Vernazza early enough to meet the 7:52 train. There's a McDonald's with two expresso machines and a sandwich shop in the station to pick up some quick food to take on the train. We saved up for lunch in the dining car on the Eurostar. At 52Euro for two, it wasn't worth it.

Carl, I don't believe that there is a staffed RR counter in Vernazza. Also, the run I describe above is without question the quickest run of the day from La Spezia to Venice. Also, it is only 1 of 3-4 runs for the entire day with one train change. All other runs have 3-4 train changes. I have recently reviewed every run for the day from La Spezia to Venice on the Trenitalia website so this is not old information. My wife and I have been on the run as well.

There may be a choice of routes, but I would go to the RR counter in Vernazza and ask the clerk for the fastest route regardless of cost. Do it the first day you arrive in CT. You go through many small towns on that route that it is a slow trip.

Dont depend on other travelers advice solely. Get an experts advice at the RR station. Schedules change frequently and you want the latest information.
