I may be in Venice or Tyrol [I think Tyrol] on June 23, 2010 and would like to travel to Oberammergau via train. Is this possible? Which website to I view for this?
First, the German Rail website is the best place to get schedules for trains all over Europe plus the only place to get true fares for Germany as well as special, online, discounted fares for Germany.
Oberammergau is at the end of a spur line from the main line (Munich to GaP) at Murnau. Any all-rail connection has to go through Murnau. There are, in addition, bus lines from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and from Oberau.
You didn't say how you are ticketing this route. If you are using a rail pass, the buses will not be covered, so you want to take a route via Murnau, although you can get there via Innsbruck to Mittenwald and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. If you are coming from Verona with a SparNight ticket on the CNL night train or with a Europa-Spezial Italien ticket (as low as €39) the entire route to Munich and then to Oberammergau via Murnau will be covered, but from Innsbruck by Austrian train via Mittenwald/GaP will not be.
To see the rail lines in Upper Bavaria (Oberbayern), go here.
Thank you to Steve, Lee, & Tom for all the information you have provided to me. As soon as I get more information as to where I will be at exactly on the day I want to travel to Oberammergau, I may be asking more questions. Again, thanks for the information.
Rene
Yes - I was in the Dolomites last summer and went by train to Munich and the Castles area after. From Bolzano area (north of venice) I took the train to Innsbruck and the toward Ruete/Fussen area in Austria just on borader from German & Neuschwanstein. The train passed through a part of Germany includign Garmish - which is probably the place to change train to get to Oberammergau.
Check it out on Diebahn.de german train web site.
