Wanting to travel from Venice to Lake Bled by train in September. Have read many different options but mostly finding out that there is no direct route. Can anyone please advise?
Your best bet will probably be to go from Venice to Villach (the regional hub for trains in southern Austria), then to Lake Bled, or "Bled Jezero" as it's known. Total travel time will be about 8.5 hours. You'll have a couple of hours layover in Villach, but that's the best connection I can find.
If you go to the German Rail website:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
you can find a better connection. Enter Venezia St. Lucia for departure and Bled Jezero for arrival.
Those runs suggested at Bahn.de would be better, as long as you don't mind getting yourself from the station at Gorizia across the border to the station at Nova Gorica. It's only a couple of miles, and they give you 40 minutes to make the connection. So you should be OK, as long as your train out of Venice remains on time.
