Train from Venice to Chiusi

We are planning to take a train from Venice to Chiusi on Saturday Sept 28. We need to leave as early as possible to be able to pick up car rental in Chiusi. Do early trains with transfers in Bologna or Florence sell out way ahead of time? (Especially economy seats) I'm trying to figure out if I need to purchase now. Also, Trenitalia is offering a two for one on Saturdays till October which may make seats scarce. Any insights are greatly appreciated!

Hi Patty. Trains in Italy almost never sell out. However, seats in each price category are limited and the least expensive seats sell out. Look at other dates closer in to get an idea of how prices will change over time. If you are sure of your dates / plans, then go ahead and purchase. Enjoy your trip!

Patty, the trains don't normally sell out. However, tickets for September 28 have been on sale since June. Thus, the 9Euro Super Economy and 19Euro Economy tickets are gone on the Frecciarossa train. They are limited and they go early. The best fare now on the first run out from Venice on 9/28 is 38,65Euro. The fares on the Regionale Veloce trains are never discounted. And, these trains cannot be sold out. If no seats, you can stand. But, there will be seats. You can buy these tickets right now online.

Also consider picking up the car in Venice. This way, you avoid paying a train fare on that day, and can get the car whenever you want without worrying about closing times. A tip I've seen several times on this Helpline: the causeway between Venice and the mainland has speed cameras. Observe the speed limit strictly, or you'll get a ticket (but not find out until months later)
