Train from Strausbourg France to Munich

We will be taking a train from Strausbourg to Munich May 28. It looks like most trains have a connection of around 10 minutes. Is this achievable when carry luggage. There is 1 non stop, but it isn’t till 5pm. Transfers are either in Stuttgart or Mannheim, is one better than the other?

10 minutes is very doable. Just don't dawdle. I believe you will have escalators to deal with in Mannheim, but Stuttgart should all be on one level IIRC.

If you are purchasing the tickets on Deutschbahn, you can specify to the site to only look for longer minimum connection times if you so wish.

If you want to see the layout of a station in Germany, go to https://www.bahnhof.de/en. Bahnhof.de has station layouts for major stations, like Mannheim and Stuttgart. Because it's all on one level, Stuttgart is probably better for a train change if you have large, heavy rolling luggage. However, it's a 'stub' station; you have to walk from your coach to the front of the train to get the connecting platform. So try to get on a coach near the front of the train when you board in Strasbourg [note the spelling].

I looked at some Bahn schedules, and it looks like a walk between the ends of Gleis (platform) 5, arrival, and Gleis 16, departure in Stuttgart, which is a distance of 100m (328 ft), not including the walk on Gleis 5.

It looks like there is one direct connection (no change), a TGV leaving Strasbourg at 5:46pm, arriving at 9:36pm.

Ten minutes is enough if the train is on time and, as CJean says, you don’t dawdle. I did that trip I in December, with the 12 minute connection in Mannheim. For your own piece of mind, use Bahn.com to look at other trains from your connection point to Munich after your anticipated arrival. I know that trains from Stuttgart to Munich run multiple times per hour, so the worst case scenario is that you have a 30 minute wait after your missed connection. Just be sure to buy a ticket that isn’t tied to one particular train.

Isn't it great how railways try to make sure you do not waste time hanging around stations?

This "we only have 10 minutes to change trains" comes up quite regularly. The thing is, this isn't air travel. There are no pre boarding procedures. If a train leaves at 12:08 and you are at the door at 12:07:59 you will be on it. Changing trains is just getting of one train, walking to another and getting on.

That is not necessary. If you miss a train because a previous train was late you are, by law, entitled to take the next available train that gets you to your destination. And that irrespective of the conditions of your ticket. And if you arrive there with a delay of more than one hour you even will get some compensation.

In some countries this does require you to exchange your ticket, but not in Germany. Just find an alternative train, and get on. This is mass transit. Its basically a nationwide commuter rail system.

just a thought when choosing - Stuttgart Hbf has been a zoo for the last couple of years because it is a building site while the station is rebuilt and staying open for trains.

I have a colleague who went through there on the way to Karlsruhe yesterday. He said that yesterday "it is still a ridiculous mess"

While the route changing in Stuttgart is nominally faster at 3 hours 44 minutes, the change is from track 5 to Track 16. if you are at the end of the train, it will be hike to the platform head then down to 16. the route changing at Mannheim goes from track 3 to Track 5, you will have to use the under passage, but there are escalators in the center of the platforms and the platforms are next to each other. It is a 12 minute change, but it does cost 10 EUR more for a Super Sparpreis ticket and the journey time is 4 hours and 5 minutes.
