Is it recommended to purchase a train ticket from St. Petersburg to Tallinn, Estonia before we travel in May?
Barb ,I hope this will be of some help ; We are planning our upcoming trip this fall - St. Petersburg to Helsinki to Tallin to Stockholm and then onward . As best as I can determine . there is no rail service from St. Petersburg direct to Tallin . There is to Helsinki ( Allegro train from Finland Station to Helsinki , 85EU per person second class , train looks great ! ) Then ferry to Tallin . Our plan ( roughly ) is overnight ferry ( St. Petersburg , Peter line , to Tallin ,likely for three days ,and then ferry to Helsinki for three days before overnight to Stockholm on Tallink Silja . I hope this helps .
According to Seat61 there is now a direct rail service between Talinn and St Petersberg (http://www.seat61.com/Estonia.htm#St_Petersburg_by_train) but it's an eight-hour trip and requires either a very early departure or late arrival.
@ Philip , Many thanks for the correction ,I had looked at seat 61 , and missed that ( more coffee would have helped ! ) . As you point out , the schedule looks somewhat unappealing .
