Train from St Petersburg to Moscow

Going on to Moscow after Rick Steves Tour that ends in St. Petersburg. Has anyone done this recently? We want to take an overnight train. Any input would be appreciated.

We took Sapsan. Russian bullet train. In 4 hours you are in Moscow.

In 2001 (actually, the evening of September 11, 2001), my sister and I took the overnight train from St. Petersburg to Moscow. We were on one of the fancy trains in first class (only two beds to a compartment, and a cold breakfast similar to an airline meal was in our cabin when we departed). It was very nice. In 2010 my sister and I took the Sapsan from Moscow to St. Petersburg and back. It was also very nice (at the time, it was brand new) and very easy. The trains are modeled on German ICE's and are quite spiffy (although WiFi is only in business class). I would take whichever one worked best with your itinerary. Some more details about these trains are on the Man in Seat 61's page, here: http://tinyurl.com/m6w3ec7 Definitely don't fly this route. The hassle of getting to, from, and through the airports is far greater than taking the trains (I know you didn't suggest flying, but I just want to make sure you don't try it).
