After a visit to St Petersberg I was hoping to take a train to Amsterdam but stopping in the Baltic countries like Latvia and Estonia along the way. Is that doeable? I was going to use the German site to get times. Should I be ok just buying tickets at the various train stations?
Will I have to deal with local currency? or can I use Euros? Thanks Any idea how long and the cost?
Rail service through the Baltics going north to south isn't very good, you'll end up making several long bus journeys if you go that way. I second the suggestion of Helsinki and the ferry, unless you get seasick easily.
St. Petersburg to Vilnius is about an 8-10 hour train ride, and Vilnius to Warsaw (avoiding going through Belarus, which is basically a mafia shake-down) is a further 8 hour ride, to give you an example of travel times you can expect.
It sounds like going through the Baltics will be a challange. I guess I was thinking western europe which is so easy to take by train.
Is it going to be a challange to get from St Petersburg to Amsterdam?
You see I was going to fly open jawed into Moscow and wanted to go home another route.
Definitely train to Helsinki and then Silja Line ship to Stockholm. From Stockholm another train to Amsterdam. I don't know how much time you have but you could spend a day or two in Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen on your way to Amsterdam. This would be a great trip!
Going through the Baltic States is not recommended. Maybe one day it will be better but not yet.
