We are arriving from a cruise in Southampton and need to get to the Cherry Court Hotel which is near Victoria Station. How do we get from the dock to the train, which train should we take, and about how long will this take (roughly)? Thank you so much.
Take a taxi to the station. There will be lots of them waiting at the dock. The trains from S'hampton go into Waterloo Station in London, about a 90 minute journey. You'll probably want to take a taxi from there to your hotel.
O. I didn't realize the trains from Southampton just went into Waterloo. I could've booked a hotel right there, but I thought maybe we could stop off at the Victoria station. Also, we have to catch an EARLY flight to Rome the morning we leave, Victoria seemed a little closer. Speaking of that, we have hired a car for the morning we leave for 4:30. The plane leaves at 7:30, do you think that will give us enough time to clear customs and get on the plane. It's a Sunday morning, so I thought maybe the traffic wouldn't be bad, but I guess Heathrow is always busy, so I'm not sure if we should leave earlier or not. Thanks.
Should be OK on a Sunday morning. We have a similar flight a few years and it went well. Traffic will be light at that time.
You can also get a coach from Southampton to London Victoria Coach Station. The National Express site has the details, see below.
http://www.nationalexpress.com/home/hp.cfm?jptype=popular
The site, if you click on the train tab at the top of the page, will also tell you train times and fares.
Otherwise, if you ask them, the cruise line should have all the info at their fingertips. I have also heard about cruise passengers grouping together and sharing the costs of private transport into London.
Any delays these days at airport departures are down to the extra security procedures. Touchwood, you seem to have allowed yourself plenty of time.
If you book well in advance on the National Express site, you can get a funfare of £1 for the coach ride.
Hi Janine, I live near Southampton and I agree with the suggestion to take the National Express bus. It's what I would do. The bus will leave from close to where you're arriving and it goes to Victoria in London.
Plus, that particular rail line (Southampton to London Waterloo) is often disrupted at weekends, when they do repairs. Then they take you off the train and transfer you to a bus for part of the journey. Oh, it's such fun.
And Tim is spot on with the advice about the cheap fare!
