Train from Sorrento to Rome

My husband and I are thinking of dropping our rental car in Sorrento, Italy rather than at the Rome airport. I can't find a train schedule between Sorrento and Rome, can anyone help? We'd like to leave early evening if possible.

Hi Sue, Sorrento is the end of the line for the Circumvesuviana line so this is an easy one. When you get to the Sorrento train station, pay for a ticket to Naples. When you get to Naples get off the Circumvesuvina train, go upstairs and purchase a ticket to Rome, that train leaves from the upstairs tracks. You can do this either at an automated ticket booth or at a manned ticket station. Voila, next stop Roma!

Circumvesuviana trains leave Sorrento at 17:07, 17:25, 17:56, 18:22, 18:40, 18:55, 19:26, and 20:07. Depending upon the number of stops, the trip takes 49-65 minutes. High-speed EuroStar Italia trains leave Naples for Rome at 18:50 and 21:30. IC trains leave at 19:17 and 20:17.

You will never see a train schedule from Sorrento to Rome. The reason is that you have to ride two different train systems to get there. Jerry and Tim have nicely indicated the schedules on the two different train systems. Both train systems have a stop at the Naples Central train station.

To purchase tickets, and look at schedules and prices, go here. Click on the British flag. Or, try this website if you're having trouble getting Trenitalia to accept your credit card...the website can be tricky. Be aware that the BootnAll site will probably charge a fee ($12-18 or so), but that's still OK when you can take advantage of those great MINI fares (advance purchase). Also, note that they use $$$; Trenitalia uses €€€!!! Don't compare apples and oranges! When using the Trenitalia site, the MINI fares won't show up; you have to go to them: first, once you're on a page with trains listed on them, use the "S*lect" button on the far right, then click on "Continue". THEN, you can see if there are any MINI fares available. Yes, time-consuming and annoying! But, to save more than half-off the regular price...I'll jump through the hoops! Basically, the ES trains are 1h10m, and €45,00 (2nd cl), €58,00 (1st cl). You CAN pay as little as €19,00 (2nd cl) - maybe lower! The IC trains are 2h04m, and cost €22,00 (2nd) and €29,00 (1st). You could get a €9,00 (2nd) ticket on that train...!!! Those MINI fares vary depending on the date and the time of day, so you have to check each train that you'd consider taking...
