My wife and I will be traveling in late Oct in Italy. We will be taking the train from Florence to Naples then we need to get to Sorrento to spend three days. Our TA scheduled a driver who will charge 90 euros from Naples to Sorrento then 170 from Sorrento to Naples with a two hour stop at Pompei. I see there is a train that runs from Naples to Sorrento then on way back it stops in Pompei. I think it is called the Circumvesuviana? Question: Is it reliable? How hard is it to get from the main Naples train station to the Circumvesuviana? Would rather spend the money on my wife than a cab. We have never been to Italy and don't speak the language! Can it be done? Help
Oh my gosh - fire your TA! Yes, the train is the Circumvesuviana. It's just a slow little commuter train that everybody uses. Catch it in the basement of the Naples train station. It stops directly at the Pompeii Scavi (the ruins) and also dead ends into Sorrento. It's also very very cheap...3 or 4 Euros.
OMG. agree with previous with poster. From Naples to Sorrento via commuter train about five euro. Is super easy from Naples train station. The main station in Naples is in the same station as local station. I assume you maybe have been in Philadelphia 30th station if you live in Yardley. You arrive on one track and go downstairs to another track, easy.
The circumvesuviana runs about every half hour.
Thanks all great information. I do have another question, what is the best way to go from Sorrento/Amalfi? We have a driver booked but I also saw that there is a ferry that gives you a great views of the coast.
By late October, most of the ferries will have stopped service for the season, or at least that head around the coast. You will still be able to get to Capri and Ischia of course. To get to Positano from Sorrento, there is a bus, not quite the same as a private driver, but much cheaper. To add to the train discussion, the Circumvesuvia is easy to use, just very slow as it stops frequently and is a commuter train for many. But it gets you to and from, and stops steps away from Pompeii as well, which has a place to store luggage while you wander the ruins. Don't be too hard on your TA, they do what is easiest and convienient for you, with less concern about cost.
Again, so helpful and thank you. This is our very first trip to Europe and we are excited and a little nervous :). So let me ask some more, Herculaneum or Pompei? Other than the Uffizi what else should we not miss in Florence? End our trip in Rome have the Vatican, Coliseum, and Pantheon on the list. Anything else? We have 3 days in Florence, 3 in Sorrento and 3 in Rome Thanks again!
Morgan, For all things Rome (and throughout Italy) your man is Ron in Rome. He has dozens and dozens of pages of extremely accurate, down-to-earth, easy to use hints on his website. It is well worth a good read through.
Morgan - where are you staying when you get to Sorrento? In town or one of the hotels on Via Capo or in the hills?
We are staying at the Bellevue Hotel Syrene in Sorrento, Antica Torre di Via Tournabuoni in Florance and Mascagni in Rome. Good choices?
Nice hotel! I asked because sometimes the extortionate cost of taxis from Sorrento railway station can eat up any savings made by using public transport to get there. Based on our experience a taxi to a place just beyond the Syrene I would guess about 15 euro give or take. You could walk, it would be about 20 minutes or so depending on luggage and busyness of the sidewalks. The hotel entrance is in Piazza Vittoria Veneto on this map. http://www.sorrentotourism.com/_downloads/1438-Italiano-pianta-sorrento--s.agnello.gif
Morgan, In Florence, you can't miss the Duomo and if you want to see David, he's in the Accadamia. Rick has a great walking tour that you can listen to on your iPod (download it on iTunes). He also has fantastic tours of the Uffizi and Accadamia...and it's all free. Download his tours for Rome, too. They're fantastic. He's got tours for the Pantheon, the Forum, all the major sites, plus several walking tours. And don't forget the Borghese Gallery. If you don't have Rick's book on Rome, please GET IT. He's got an itinerary for a three-day visit to Rome. Also, I'd pick Pompeii over Hurculaneum...you got some great advice here about the trains... We are also heading back to Italy this October, concentrating on Southern Italy and the east coast. We are splurging and hiring a driver to take us down the Amalfi coast. (Watch Rick's video on uTube.) You can also take a bus, but our driver is taking us to Ravello for lunch and giving us plenty of opportunities to stop and take pictures...
Lynette Thank you for the great information. We to are splurging on the drive for Amalfi. Will also look at all Rich as to offer. This is the greatest site
