My husband and I will be traveling through Austria and Italy middle of September. I am trying to find the best and cheapest route from Schladming to Venice - take the night time train and save on hotel with one stop (11 hours:() or go during the day on the shortest route? I cannot seem to find a train site that will show me the fares to make the comparison.
On the Austrian Rail site I found a 2nd class fare of €26.30 for day trains from Schladming to Villach (one change in Bischofshofen). For Villach-Venezia Santa Lucia a SparSchiene fare can be as low as €19.
On the same site I found a fare of €29.10 for the train that leaves Schladming at 19:09 and arrives in Woergl at 21:49. The direct CNL night train leaves Woergl at 22:20 and arrives at Venezia Santa Lucia at 06:38. Neither the Austrian Rail site nor the German Rail site shows the fares specifically for Woergl-Venezia. That train originates in Munich and the German Rail site shows discount fares for the entire route as follows: €79 for a bunk in a six-person couchette, €89 for a bunk in a four-person couchette, and €119 for a bed in a two-person sleeper. (Standard fares are higher.)
I suggest that you phone the Austrian Rail call center to book your tickets. Ask about SparSchiene fares for the Villach-Venezia day train and Spar-Night fares for the Woergl-Venezia night train. Dial 011 (US internatinal access code) + 43 (country code for Austria) + (0)5-1717. Omit the zero in parentheses. It is only used for calls originating in Austria.
