I can get a second class ticket but have not been unable to get a ticket for an assigned seat to go along with second class ticket. Will be traveling during the Christmas Holiday and have heard you should get a seat assigned along with the second class ticket. Any help will be appreciated.

First place, it's Salzburg (with a 'u'), in case you are trying to find schedules or book reservations online. Yes, you should have reservations over the Christmas holiday, particularly Christmas day and the day after (the 26th, a holiday in Germany called second day of Christmas). First vs second class makes no difference as to reservations, but you cannot reserve a seat on a regional train (RE or RB, also not on ALX). If you book your ticket for express trains (ICE, IC, EC, or the express bus to Prague) on the German Rail (Bahn) website, you can make your reservation along with booking a ticket. You can also go onto the German Rail website and make a seat reservation only for the same trains. If you buy a ticket for the Bahn bus that goes from Munich or Nürnberg, a reservation is mandatory and automatically included.
