i need to purchase train tickets from Rothenburg to Frankfurt, getting off at the Mainstation and walking to Niedenau Street. Looking at the DB website, the "HBF" is the station I need, correct?
Yes, in German, haupt is "main". So, the Hauptbahnhof, or Hbf, is the main station.
As an alternative to point-point tickets, you can buy a Bayern-Ticket (€28 for up to five people). That will take you to Kahl am Main, the last station in Bavaria. From there, a €7,15 local (RMV) ticket, purchasable at the counter or automat in Rothenburg, will get you from Kahl to Frankfurt Hbf.
The RMV (Frankfurt metro) website does not recognize Niedenau Str., so I can't tell you how to get there, but, as long as it's in the central zone of Frankfurt, and as long as you proceed directly to your destination, use of any other transport in Frankfurt will be covered by your ticket.
BTW, try Rothenburg odT, or Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
Oops! My mistake! Thanks for the train info, Lee!
Jane,
One additional point to add, is that you'll likely have to change trains in Steinach and perhaps Wurzburg. Rothenburg is on a "spur line", so you'll probably find that you're on a diesel train until you reach the main line.
It's quite a pleasant journey from Rothenburg to Frankfurt.
Cheers!
Thanks, Ken!
The train from Steinach to Rothenburg is a shuttle. It come into a dedicated track, off to the side, in Steinach. I doubt that it ever goes anywhere but Rothenburg to Steinach, and back.
When I was there in 1988, it was an oil burning switch engine. While we were waiting to go back to Steinach, we watched the engineer doing routing maintenance on the engine. It was kind of a one man operation then.
Wow, that's kind of cool! BTW I was just looking at the DB schedule to get an idea of how my older son will get back to Freiburg from Rothenburg, my younger son and I will be going on to Frankfurt for our flight out. There doesn't look to be anything but a very long day of Regional Buses for him..I'm wondering if it would just be better for him to go to Frankfurt with us and then take the train from there the next day to Freiburg.
Here is map from the Fox and Hounds pub that is located on Niedenaustrasse. Looks like you if you come in to Frankfurt on an S-bahn, you can get off at Taunusanlage perhaps. What is the name of the hotel? Most hotels have google maps or directions to them using public transportation.
