Train from Rome to Siena - via Orvieto & Civita, maybe

We'll be leaving Rome about noon & have a room booked for the same night in Siena. We'd like to see Orvieto and Civita on the way to Siena as well but can't figure out if it's feasible to take the train to Orvieto & then the bus (am I correct that there is no bus service to Civita (?) to Civita. Is it feasible to attempt this in one afternoon? Anyone have suggestions? Note: After Siena we have a room booked in Florence for 2 nights in Florence & thought we could take a morning trip to Pisa out of Florence. Please tell me if this sounds too ambitious.

sherrie, Visiting Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio as a "stop-over" from Rome to Siena is going to be extremely difficult! The trip from Rome to Siena is ~3-4.5H (with one change), depending on which train you choose). If you add a 2.5H stop-over in Orvieto, the travel time increases to ~7-7.5H. Adding a visit to Civita complicates this further. The trip from Orvieto to Bagnoregio is at least one hour via Bus (plus waiting times of course). When you arrive in Bagnoregio, you'll have to take the small Shuttle to the base of the bridge that leads to Civita which will add another 20M. or so. That wouldn't leave much time for exploring Civita, as you'd have to ensure you didn't miss the last Bus back to Orvieto. IMHO, it's not worth the time and effort! Is there any possibility of adding a day to your trip, or dropping one day in Rome to allow at least one night in Orvieto? Happy travels!

I'm with Ken. The only way I would try this trip on your limited schedule... is by car. Since your rooms are already booked, you could leave earlier, rent a car in Rome drive to Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio, and then connect and back-road (SS2) up to Siena. But you would still be arriving pretty late - and you'd have to park, then return the car! I do think you're being ambitious, especially if you do not plan on leaving Rome till noon... that's probably impossible even in a car. I'd plan on just heading to Siena - as there's much to see there.
