What train services are available from Rome to Paris?
Len, You'll be travelling via the rail systems in each country - SNCF in France and Ferrovie dello Stato in Italy. I haven't checked but there will be several changes, likely including one in Milano Centrale. That particular trip will be a LONG one by rail, so you might consider using a budget flight instead. Have a look at EasyJet as I believe they have flights from FCO to CDG. If you decide to travel via budget flight, BE SURE to read their "Terms & Conditions" carefully! Happy travels!
The German Rail site will show you all routes and times, but the Trenitalia site won't. That's because trains that operate in Italy under the sole jurisdiction of French Rail don't appear on the Trenitalia site. This includes the best daytime route which is Roma Termini-Milano Centrale and Milano Porta Garibaldi-Paris Lyon. The second leg doesn't appear on the Trenitalia site. If I were to go from Rome to Paris by train, I would take a EuroStar Italia train from Roma Termini to Milano Centrale, departing at 19:15 and arriving at 22:40. Then I would take the Thello night train from Milano Centrale to Paris Lyon, departing at 23:38 and arriving at 09:39. If I had unlimited daytime hours at my disposal, I would take the route I described in the first paragraph above. Otherwise I would fly on a budget airline. To see all your airline choices, both budget airlines and national carriers, use the search engine skyscanner.com.
If you want to see the schedule go to bahn.de or trenitalia.com. The bahn site is a little easier to use.
Len,, unless you have a burning desire to train it,, and that means alot of training,, and no scenery if done as a night train,, and probably little sleep, and also possibily more money, then train it,, but 1.5hr by flight ,, and flights can be cheaper then train,, I would consider it,, in fact, I did , i compared train to flying a few years ago and when I saw how much train was ( at that time almost 300 euros) as opposed to flying( 80 euros on Vueling) that different made it clear for me.
I've just done that trip by train. I broke it up into two days. Roma-Milano-Basel, and a night at the very nice and convenient Ibis Hotel. Next morning Basel to Paris (and we continued under the channel to London and home on the same day). So, yes it certainly can be done, and if you were going straight through and winding up in Paris you could certainly start in Rome at 8:00 and wind up in Paris by evening - but it would certainly take all day by train.
