Congratulations on your trip!!

First, the trains are safe -- if you are smart. Anyone can attract unsafe activity.

Some trains and some classes of service do serve breakfast. It looks like to get from Rome to Paris the most expedient route is a train from Rome to Milan (3 hours) with a 1 1/2 hour layover to an overnight from Milan to Paris (leave just before midnight, arrive after 8am). Here's a link to a possible route on RailEurope -- don't buy point-to-point tickets through RailEurope, you can find cheaper ones elsewhere. Link: Rome To Paris

I'll see what else I can dig up -- and someone with more Italy overnight train experience should chime in shortly (I've only done 2, and that was 10 years ago!)

EDIT: I've got to correct myself. I looked closer at the page I linked and there is a direct overnight -- Train Artesia Night 226 departs Rome at 6:20pm arriving Paris at 9:16am -- meals are available, but not included in the fare.

There is a direct EuroNight train (EN 226) from Rome to Paris. It goes via Florence and Bologna. It does not go via Milan. It departs Rome Termini at 18:20 and arrives at Paris-Bercy at 09:16. There is a restaurant on board.

trenitalia.com, the Italian Rail Web site, offers advance purchase discount fares. Unfortunately, it's possible that the site won't accept a Puerto Rican credit card. (I can tell you for sure that it doesn't accept US credit cards.) However, if your card is accepted, you can book tickets up to 90 days in advance.

And since popular night trains like this one can sell out weeks in advance, it would be very risky to wait until you get to Italy to book tickets at a station where your credit card should work just fine.

So if your credit card doesn't work on the Trenitalia site, then I'm afraid that you're stuck with booking with Rail Europe--and paying for the "privilege" of doing so.

I recommend that you either book bunks in a four-person couchette (more elbow room than in a six-person couchette for not much more money) or splurge and book beds in a sleeper. With both couchettes and sleepers, your cabin door locks from the inside.

I'm not against trains, however, when on vacation, time is valuable.
You can fly from the other Rome airport(not fco) to Orlay in Paris on Easyjet(easyjet.com) for as low as 40 Euros(including luggage) each in June. Just an option

Yes,, do be careful if on a budget,, flying can end up cheaper,, even if you have to pay for a hotel for an extra night.

Vueling also flys between Paris and Rome,, and its fine,, I did it a few years ago. I think I paid 80 euros at that time, but it was high season
