Traveling by train from Rome to Lucca Can anyone recommend which departure and arrival train station we should choose? We are staying at the Courtyard Rome Central Park which is near the Gemelli train station. Not sure if we can get the high-speed train from this station.
Marci, there are about 25 train runs of various types making the runs north to Florence, Pisa or Viareggio (mostly Florence) and then onto to Lucca. All of these runs involve a high-speed FRECCI train from Rome-Termini. From either Florence, Pisa or Viareggio, it's Regionale train to Lucca. No high-speeds at Lucca. The train station in Lucca is Lucca. I think that there is another train station there but just say or Lucca and you'll get to the correct station. Travel times vary a bit from 3hrs10min to 4hrs10min depending on the run. All runs have at least one train change. Some of the runs have 2 train changes. I see that one run has 4 train changes. Personally, I'd skip that one. If you book early, I see fares as low as 26Euro. These tickets are both non-refundable and non-exchangeable. The ordinary full fare (Trenitalia calls it ordinary) is 50Euro.
Gemelli isn't on one of the main Trenitalia rail lines, but rather on the suburban line between Viterbo and Roma Ostiense. By train from Gemelli, you have 2 options. Take the suburban train to Valle Aurelia stop, switch to Metro Line A to Roma Termini, take a high-speed train from Termini to Florence or Pisa and a regional train from there to Lucca. Or, take the suburban train to Roma Ostiense station, take an Italio high-speed train from Ostiense to Florence and a regional train to Lucca.
