Train from Rome Airport to Lucca

Hi All , looking for advice / tips on travelling from Rome Airport to Lucca. From what I have read there is a train station at the airport to get to Rome Termini, is this easily accessible? From Rome Termini the fast train departs for Florence where we need to change trains, is this just a change of platforms , is it advisable to book now or can we purchase tickets on the day in case our flight is late etc.
Thank you in advance. Cheers .

The train station at the airport is easily accessible.
When you get to Florence you will change platforms for the train to Lucca.

If you book a train ticket in advance it is best to book one that is refundable if you miss the train, these are the most expensive.

Otherwise book the ticket in advance only when you know your flight is arriving on time and give yourself at least 2 hours to catch it after landing or book it when you arrive.

Unlike the Rome to Florence train the Florence to Lucca leg is a regional train and does not require a reservation; the ticket is good for any regional train from Florence to Lucca.

Just follow the signs - it is well marked - to the Leonard Express. Runs twice an hour. After buying the ticket at the ticket window MAKE SURE you validate (time stamp) the ticket. You can also buy your ticket to Lucca at the window at the airport station or from a ticket machine/window in Termini. It is smarter to buy your ticket to Lucca after you arrive for the reasons you indicate. Even a refundable ticket has a time limit for the refund. And you save nothing buying a refundable ticket in advance. It is easy to change in Florence -- small station and may not even be a platform charge. You have it worked out pretty well.

Get a through ticket from FCO to Lucca at the airport station.

The agent will put you either on the Leonardo Express train to Roma Termini or on the FL1 train to Roma Tiburtina, depending on which train is departing first. All High speed trains to Florence call at Tiburtina after departing from Termini.

All "Regionale" paper tickets must be time-stamped before getting on. I think that the Florence-Lucca train is a Regionale.

What time does your flight arrive in Rome? The reason I ask is because you can take a direct train departing from Rome’s (Roma) Fiumicino Airport (FCO) at 1:53p arriving at Florence’s (Firenze) SM Novella station at 4:11p. At 5:09p there’s a direct train departing Florence SM Novella station to Lucca arriving at 6:29p. When you’re hauling luggage the fewer connections means fewer brusies: https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html.

The train from Florence to Lucca is definitely the milk run. You stop at every town, village, farm, and cow that may yield milk. Be mentally prepared. You might consider the faster bus.

is it necessary to book a ticket beforehand

If you mean the high speed train from Rome to Florence, it's not necessary but it's cheaper. When you get tickets on the day of travel you always pay the top Walk-up fare, called Base on trenitalia.com

On the other hand, discounted tickets sell out quickly and must be purchased in advance. Keep in mind that those tickets are cheaper because they come with restrictions related to changes and refunds. Get one only when your plans are set.

There are no discounted fares and no reserved seats on Airport and Regionale trains.
