train from roma termini to napoli centrale

I am going to Positano in September '14 and flying into Rome. I arrive in Rome @ 12:45 PM and there is a train leaving Termini at 3:45 PM. I am wondering if that allows me enough time to get through customs and catch the train from the airport to Termini. It appears that if I should get delayed and miss the 3:45 train the tickets can't be exchanged for a later train. The next train doesn't leave for another 2 hours and frankly after traveling for 15 hours I don't fancy hanging around the Termini station for several hours. Any thoughts or recommendations?

It looks like there is also a 4:45 pm train as well. You might consider buying the Economy fare which can be changed before departure. If you are late arriving/exiting customs and it looks like you won't make it, you can exchange for a later train when you purchase your Leonardo Express ticket to Termini at the airport ticket station.

Is the flight into Rome domestic or international? Big difference. Domestic probably OK, international probably not.

Just to be clear on the exchange. It will not be economy ticket to economy ticket IF an economy fare is not available on the next train. Then you will get a credit towards the full fare ticket. And all of this needs to be done prior to your original train leaving the station. All ticket are dead when the train moves. You use to have a grace period but no longer.

Laurie,

There are numerous trains from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale every day (in some cases, every 20 minutes or so). If your flight arrives at 12:45, you may be able to connect with a 14:25 departure via Freccia high speed train. There are also some slower InterCity and Regionale trains at about that time.

If you'll be arriving on a flight from the U.S., I'd allow at least an hour for Passport control and retrieving your luggage. It will take another 35 minutes on the Leonardo Express from the airport to Roma Termini (fare €14 PP, DON'T forget to validate your tickets prior to boarding the train). If you're going to be using a train that requires compulsory reservations, it would be "safer" to buy your tickets at the airport rail station on the day of arrival rather than pre-purchasing, in case your flight is delayed for any reason.

How are you planning to travel from Napoli Centrale to Positano?

Hi Ken,
I have a private car picking me up at the station in Naples and bringing me to Positano. It's more expensive but after the long hours of travel from the states to Rome and then the train to Naples, I know I won't have the patience or energy for bus.

My luggage will be carry on so I'm hoping that help with reducing my time getting through the airport and to the Leonardo Express

Unfortunately that is not a guarantee. We arrived about the same time last May, from New York and immigrations took over two hours. Just two immigration officers working what must have been three or four planes unloading at nearly the same time. That might be unusual but it can happen. So you need to plan for the worst situation instead of the best.

Laurie,

The scenario that Frank described is exactly the reason it's "safer" to buy your rail tickets when you arrive. While you could breeze through Passport control quickly, the opposite situation is also possible.

It's great that you have transportation arranged to Positano. A car service will absolutely be the best option after a long international flight.

I would just add that the Leonardo Express takes just over half an hour, but only runs twice an hour, so you should allow 1 hour for that. The Leonardo Express stops some distance from the rest of the trains, so you may need 10-15 minutes at Termini to get to the Naples train, especially with the crowds. I looked at the Trenitalia schedule - the most time between trains is one hour.

I found on my last trip to Rome that the Leonardo Express seems to operate from Tracks 23 & 24 now, rather than Tracks 25 & 26 which are a bit of a walk at the outer end of the station.

I would buy train tickets upon arrival for about 43 euros per person in 2nd class and not try to shave down the price with non-refundable advance tickets. If your source of train schedules was not showing at least hourly departures then try the DB train schedule link and tips for using it.
