train from pier into Rome

We will be stopping on a cruise and was wondering about the transportation by train into Rome and how time consuming or worthwhile it would be compared to taking a cruise sanctioned shore excursion. I'm just looking at time constraints and ease to get into Vatican City. Has anyone out there done this ?

It is done hundreds of times. We have made the trip a couple of times. Go see RoninRome.com for detail description of Tome to Civit just do it in reverse. It is basically a commuter run of 45 to 1.15 depending on train, three or four an hour depending on time of day. Buy an all day ticket from the tobacco shop for about 9 Euro (two years ago price, higher today) The train station is about ten minute walk from the entrance to the port and your cruise ship will provide a shuttle to the port entrance.

Dianne, Check out veniceforvisitors.com. Very much like roninrome. We've been to both many times so feel free to send us a pm if you need any specifics. Hope this helps.
