we're trying to book 2 tickets from Paris to Vimy (online) and can't seem to do the seat selection process....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
any other tips re: train travel (smoking permitted?) would be appreciated

Are you using the http://www.tgv-europe.com website? If so, will it not even let you make a seat selection for the TGV portion from Paris to Arras?

There is no need to select seats. You will be assigned seats on the Paris-Arras TGV and there is open seating on regional trains.
Smoking is not permitted on French trains.
