when looking at the train schedule from paestum to naples, i see there are two trains that leave early morning, but there is a red x and regionale veloc under train category. so, how do i get tickets for the early trains as the site will not allow me to go further past this schedule.

All trains from Paestum to Naples are Regionale locals. No seat reservations permitted. You can't even reserve or buy on the Trenitalia website. The train category Regionale Veloc with a red X is a new caterory on the Trentialia website. I believe that its their new double-decker Regionale cars but I'm not sure yet. Same rules seem to apply to all Regionales. This particular Regionale train makes several stops on the way to Naples including Pompei (the town and not the ruins which are not in the town).

I bought my train ticket at a cafe near the museum. If staying overnight in Paestum and departing early, buy your tickets the day before. You cannot buy tickets at the station, but you can validate them there before boarding. Also, you won't get a traditional train ticket showing Paestum to Naples. It will look more like a metro ticket. Trains heading to Naples stop at the platform right in front of the station, so don't take the underpass to the other side.
