Train from Munich to Prague

I will be traveling from Munich to Prague in December. It appears from the bahn.de site that the route is now handled by a private rail company, Länderbahn und Vogtlandbahn GmbH, whose train numbers are ALX354, for example. Does anyone have any experience with these trains? Is a supplement required with a railpass?

Is a supplement required with a railpass?

No. ALX is just one of many private rail companies running trains on the Bahn's rails in accordance with a politcally mandated privatization policy. These are still regional trains. No supplement is required and "regional passes" like the Laender-Tickets are valid.

Unless you are using a global pass, you might consider if you want to use a day of your railpass for this trip. You can get a Bayern-Boehmen-Ticket for €23 Single, €33 up to five people. That will get you to Plzen. From there, you can get a Czech Rail ticket to Prague for less than €10 pP. You have to change trains in Plzen anyway.

If you are traveling on a workday, the Bayern-Boehmen-Ticket is only valid after 9 AM. You can wait until the 12:44 train, or you can take the 8:44 train from Munich if you also buy a €6,90 MVV ticket to Freising, which the train get to just after 9 AM.

Lee, thanks for the tips and information. Maybe I can get by with a lower cost railpass too. You mention that I have to change trains in Plzen. The ALX trains on bahn.de say there is no train change. Is that incorrect?
By the way, do you have any idea about the quality/type of rolling stock used on the ALX trains? The only pictures I have found show new looking cars but the train looks almost like a local, but I'm not sure I found the right picture.

Strange. If you request "only local transport" on the Bahn website, it shows the ALX train from Munich to the border, then a change to a Czech Rail "Os" at Furth and an 8 hour trip. This would certainly indicate that the ALX is considered a regional train in Germany.

However, if you say to show all connections, the ALX is shown going straight thru to Prague in 6 hours. Perhaps the ALX is considered a regional train in Germany, but an express in the CR.

The Czech Rail website does not even show the ALX connection. Anyway, the Bayern-Boehmen is valid for service to Plzen. Whether you can use it on the ALX all the way to Plzen or whether you have to use the Czech Rail regional trains in the CR, I'm not really sure.

The German Rail website shows that ALX train running to Plzen as R355 and the Bahn webpage says that the Bayern-Boehmen ticket is valid in the CR for 'R' trains (as well as Os). So I would say you shouldn't have any trouble using the Bayern-Boehmen Ticket to Plzen on that ALX train. You should ask the conductor if you can buy the ticket from Plzen to Prague on the train.

BTW, the Czech Rail website gives the fare from Plzen to Praha (Prague) as 147 Kc (€5,68)

I have traveled the route from Munich to Prague. Save a Rail Pass day and buy a Bayern ticket to Furth Im Wald then a ticket from there to Prague. Both can be purchased in Munich. Ours was a 6 hour trip.

The Anschluss ticket for the Border (Furth im Wald) to Praha, purchased in Munich from the Bahn, is €26,10 pP. If you are traveling alone, a Bayern-Ticket Single is €20. Total that way is €46,10.

If you get a Bayern-Boehmen-Ticket instead, it will be €23 and get you to Plzen. The Czech Rail fare from Plzen to Praha is less than €6,00 pP, less than €29 for one person.

I'd rather pay €29 than €46. The only risk you take is not being able to buy a ticket from Plzen to Praha on the train from the conductor after you pass Furth im Wald. Then you would have to get off in Plzen to get the ticket, but there are lots of trains from Plzen to Praha (and some buses, too).

There are direct (no change of trains) connections leaving Munich at 8:44 and 16:43. There is also a connection at 12:44 with one change of train at Schwandorf. There three connections take just over 6 hours.

There is also a connection using an ICE to Nuernberg and a bus from there. It makes the trip faster (5+ hours) but the full fare is about €90. However, with advance purchase online, you can get that ticket for as low as €24.
