Train From Munich To Passau

I am planning a trip very early November.
My wife and I will have4 about 4 pieces of luggage.
What train can we take from Munich to Passau that we can book, and take/store this luggage? What price can I expect?

Thank you

"My wife and I will have about 4 pieces of luggage."

Four pieces of luggage? Get a new wife!

Oh, but seriously, the fastest connection to Passau is a Regional Express train (RE) direct from Munich Hbf to Passau in 2:13. It costs €29,10 pP, but, if you leave after 9 AM, both of you can do it for a total of €27 with a Bayern-Ticket. This is a regional train and no seat reservations are available.

You can also do the trip with a regional train from Munich to Plattling (about 1hr 45min), a few minutes cross platform change in Plattling, and a half hour dash by ICE (reservable) to Passau. Total time is slightly longer, 2hr 21min, and the fare is €37 pP, plus €2 pP reservation fee.

If you are really desperate to take reservable trains, you can go by ICE to Nürnberg, then by ICE to Passau. That trip will take you 3hr 10min and cost €68 per person, but for €2 pP at the time of online ticketing, or €4 pP at the counter, you can have reserved seats. In Nürnberg you will have eight minutes to make a four platform change (with 4 pieces of luggage).

I would take the non-reservable regional train if I were you.

All fares I gave are for 2nd class from German Rail; see the German Rail query page.

And, BTW, if you book through RailEurope, that connection that would cost €13,50 pP, about $21 each pP with a Bayern-Ticket will cost $59 pP. The €37 ($57 pP) RE/ICE connection through Plattling will cost $79 pP through R.E.

Thank you for the info. Regional sounds cheap.
Can you usually get tickets on the walk-up?
After the wife gets done, the luggage(weight)
will be worse !

Is there a place for the luggage on the Regional?

Thanks, Larry

There are no limits on the number of Bayern-Tickets sold; you can get them on a "walk-up" basis. However, the €27 price is for purchasing from an automat. Using automats is easy. At the counter the Bayern-Ticket is €29, €2 more for personal assistance.

In several hundred connections in Germany, I have only been on a couple that were so crowded that I could not put my bag on the seat next to me. With two people, you could probably use the seat across the aisle. And, there are also overhead racks. In addition there is space at the end of the car, near the door. I would be a little apprehensive about leaving my luggage so far away, but realistically, the Germans as a whole are far more honest than Americans, so that might not be a concern.
