train from monterosso to Rome help?

Hi we are leaving monterosso on the 30th june to
Rome, but wanted to stop in Pisa on the way through.
But i can only see 1 train leaving Pisa on the
trentalia website for that date (is that possible?)
Would we be better off to just get the train from
La spezia direct to Rome?
We would love to see Pisa but
we also dont want to arrive in Rome too late in the day.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks

Ross, you are looking out too far on the Trenitalia website. Trenitalia updates their schedules twice a year. Mid-June is the next update. Your views of June 30 will be sketchy. Not to worry. Just put in a date in late May and you'll see all the runs.

The trip from Monterosso to Rome takes about 5.0hrs. Some runs require a train change in Pisa and then its direct to Rome. A visit to the Leaning Tower will take you about 2.0-3.0hrs. It takes 30 minutes to walk in and 30 minutes to walk out. You can lessen this visit if you taxi in and out.

All the runs I see are on trains that have seat reservations. This includes the ICPlus train. If you want to see Pisa, get a ticket from Monterosso to Pisa. Then, get another ticket from Pisa to Rome. For this second run, there are a couple of R train runs. They take longer because they stop at every stop. No seat reservations permitted. You can just buy a ticket and hop on. Just make sure you know which train you are trying to catch. For the ICPlus and EScity trains, you will get a ticket with a fixed departure time and seat reservation. You will need to meet this train on time. CLICK HERE to see the afternoon schedule.

Thankyou for your reply.
It was the dates i was putting in that were throwing me off.
looks like we will stop in pisa for a few hours on the way through,is there any need to pre book tickets for the fast trains with a seat or should it be easy enough to just buy the ticket to rome when we arrive in Pisa?

The trains really don't fill up except for the locals in the CT. Wait until you see those. Just hop on and stand between the towns if you must. Its just a few minutes. Also, in you are in the back of the train, expect to get off in a tunnel at one of those towns.

As for your tickets, you might plan ahead and buy them when you first arrive in Monterosso. Or, if you plan well, you can buy before you go to the CT and try for discounts. There are some if you buy 7 days or more out from the trip. Good cost savings. Up to you.

There is also a bus that goes from the train station to the tower. The TI is the station can give you the details. You can check you luggage at the station.

Jeff is correct. Pisa has a great staffed luggage storage area. Go south on the platform. It's between the last two buildings on your left. 3Euro per bag. They make a copy of your passport picture and place it with the luggage. You need to show your passport to get your luggage back. Watch for the hours of operation. Also, we experience the person not being there for a short time when we returned.
