Train from Milan to Vernazza (Cinque Terre)

I will be traveling from Milan to Cinque Terre by train. Can I wait to buy my train tickets when I am in Milan? I am finding that there maybe a high speed train from Milan to Genoa that I reserve and then a regional train to Vernazza. I will be traveling in May, so I just want to make sure if need to book something before I go I do.

Liz, there are lots of trains from Milan to the CT. You won't have any problems waiting until you get there to buy the tickets. Note that not as many trains stop at Vernazza as they do at Monterosso or Riomaggiore. Still, there are plenty. I'm attaching a link below to a train schedule for May 22. It only shows part of the day. You will have at least one train change somewhere. Also note that there are runs with ICPlus and EC trains. These trains do require seat reservations. However, don't worry. You get the seat reservation when you buy the ticket at either the ticket window or self-service machine. Note also that you will receive a ticket for each different train that you will be on. Expect 2-3 tickets. The ticket for the ICPlus or EC train will have date, time, train number and seat number. The ticket for the R trains are "open" tickets. You won't see a date, time or seat number. Just get on a take a seat. During busy times in the CT, the R trains through the CT could be full. Could be standing only. Just get on. Again, don't fret. It's part of the local culture there and it's only a few minutes between towns. It's like the NY subway or London Tube.
