Train from Milan to Venice - need tickets in advance?

I haven't seen anything that makes me think I absolutely need to purchase tickets in advance to go from Milan to Venice, but I also haven't seen anything that makes me 100% sure I don't need to. Since none of my credit cards work on Trenitalia's web site, I can either book through raileurope.com and pay a higher price, or plan to buy a ticket the day I need it. But, I'm not sure if assuming the train won't be full is a good idea. I'll be traveling in August, if that makes a difference.

Lauren,
I'm going to Venice from Rome in early August. I booked through raileurope for $90 US. One less thing for me to have to worry about. I too heard I can just go to the station and buy my ticket(s) there. I opted to buy ahead. It's really up to you.

Lauren,

Buy your ticket when you arrive in Italy and you'll pay €30.50 for a 2nd class fare. You'll have no trouble getting a seat for the train of your choice, especially if you can buy your ticket one or two days in advance.

Direct trains make the trip in 2hr35min. Here are some departure times: 08:05, 08:35, 09:05, 09:35, 11:35, 12:05, 12:35, 13:35, 14:35, 15:05. You can also depart at 10:15 and make a connection in Bologna, but that trip takes 3hr18min.
