I don't really want to buy my ticket from Milan to Lucerne until the day of because I'm not sure what time I'll be arriving in Milan. Will buying the ticket the day of be a problem?
Are you traveling on a holiday?
I've never had a problem in Italy buying a ticket on the day that I wanted to travel. That being said, I have heard of people reporting problems when they tried to travel on a holiday.
I'd suggest that you print out the rail schedule for the day that you plan to travel and bring it with you. It helps when you arrive at the railway station if you already have some idea of what your options are.
I don't think you will have any problem. We made that run last year in mid June and second class was half full on the 11 AM train.
No it's not a holiday, so we should be ok. I'll print off a schedule and aim for one of the times. We are meeting a friend who lives in Lucerne. Thanks for the help.
Take a look at the Cisalpino train runs from Milan to Lucerne. They route via Lugano and the Gotthard pass. It's an hour shorter than other runs and is very scenic. You can see these runs on www.rail.ch (Swiss train website). You will change trains as you get somewhat close to Lucerne.
