Train from Malpensa Airport to Milano Cardona Station

Do I buy a ticket before boarding the train? Where would I find a location at the airport to purchase a train ticket. Can I catch the train right from the airport? Approximately how long is the trip from the airport to Milano Cardona Station where I am meeting my friend? Thank you!

Yes to your first 3 questions. There is a train station at the airport. Note, however, that the trains departing this station go to both Milano Centrale and Milano Cardona. You need to be sure which one you are on. The train to Cardona used to be called the Malpensa Express but now, with the second train running to Milano Centrale, I don't know if both are called by the same name. The fare for the Cardona train is 11E. The trip takes 36 minutes. Do not board the train without a validated ticket. You first buy the ticket and then you validate it at the little yellow box in the train station. Big fine if you don't. Here's a link to a sample train schedule. http://orario.trenitalia.com/b2c/nppPriceTravelSolutions.do?car=0&stazin=milano+malpensa&stazout=milan&datag=30&datam=03&dataa=2011&timsh=06&stazin_r=Staz_DA&stazout_r=Staz_A&timsm=24&timsm_r=24&lang=en&nreq=5&channel=tcom&npag=1&lang_r=en&nreq_r=5&channel_r=tcom&npag_r=1&x=38&y=13 In the train column, the designation MI N CA is Cardona.

This is just an aside, as Larry's information is pretty complete, but Malpensa is probably my favorite European airport because of its train, and because (I timed this), we once landed, cleared customs, exchanged money, bought our train tickets, and had boarded the train to Lake Como in only 15 minutes after arrival.
