train from Madrid to Seville

I need advice. I am flying into Madrid and need to travel to Seville.
How do I best get to the train station and then to Seville?
I am concerned about making a train reservation in case my flight is delayed and I don't arrive in time.
Is it easy to get a same day reservation at the train station? I am arriving late September and am not a Spanish speaker.

Thanks for any advice,
Mary

You are best not to buy a ticket until your arrival. You'd either have to buy a full price fare (which offers no price advantage to buying early) or risk a flight/arrival delay and losing the value of your ticket if you miss your train. Trains rarely sell out and the Sevilla line has lots of departures.

There is a RENFE ticket office at the airport; I'd buy your ticket there as lines are short and there will be English speakers (not always the case with RENFE). They can direct your to the most efficient way to get to Atocha Station from the airport.

Mary,

As Douglas has mentioned, it's generally recommended to wait to buy your train ticket for travel on day of arrival just in case there are unforeseen delays with your flight or at the airport (passport control, baggage claim, etc, etc.)

The Renfe staff at the airport (Terminal 4) will sell you tickets for the best connection time since you'll need to travel to Puerta de Atocha station first. If you buy an AVE ticket (Madrid to Sevilla), you'll receive a free Cercanías train ticket which you can use to travel on the Cercanías C-1 line to Atocha's station. Once you arrive to Atocha's station, you'll have to go to a different level to find the AVE train platforms.

Enjoy your trip!
