Train from Madrid’s Suarez Airport to Seville’s Santa Justa train station

My adult sons will be traveling from Denver Colorado to Seville Spain to meet me on 11 September 2025. They can catch a train at Suarez airport and get off at Atocha Train Station. From there, it appears there are numerous & regular trains to Seville. My question is do they need to purchase the Atocha to Seville train tickets ahead of time? Or can they purchase when they arrive at Atocha? Given airline delays, etc, it would be risky to purchase a ticket for a specific train as flights could be delayed or passport control could be light or busy. Thanks!

Yes, you can purchase the Madrid->Sevilla ticket at the airport train station.

At that point, you're in Spain and you have your luggage, so the potential issues
with making the train are past.

Small bonus, the trip from MAD to Atocha is free since you're buying a ticket for
Renfe. Small issue, if the next train to Sevilla is sold out you might have to wait
a bit longer.

`Buy a Renfe ELIGE train ticket which makes the cheapest train ticket changeable to a different train within reasonable timeframes. Details at www.Seat61.com. Do a search for “How to buy Train Tickets for Spain.”

You can also look at Iryo. They have flexible tickets too, and their tickets include free use of the Cercanias as well.

To use the train (Actually the commuter train the Cercanias) is handy if you arrive at Terminal 4, and it likely means a change at Chamartin. If arriving at T 1/2/3, the direct bus to Madrid Atocha might be easier and quicker, getting to T4 for the train takes time and a bit of a hassle.

Great info, thanks all! They will be coming into T1, so shuttle to T4, C1 or C4 commuter train to Atocha, then train to Seville. Pretty long day from denver. Might recommend a taxi from Airport to Atocha due to lack of sleep. Or the night in Madrid. Thanks again!
