Train from Livorno (cruise stop) to Firenze

We're taking a cruise with a stop in Livorno. It seems like the train from Livorno to Firenze (and back again) is the most economical. (The excursion desk wants about $200 pp for a coach bus.) However, from the look of Trenitalia site, it appears all of the 1st and 2nd class reservations for the morning trips to Florence (and the late afternoon trips to return) are booked and unavailable. We are going the second week of July. Can you buy tickets at the station, even if the reservations are full online? Should I chance it? Or should I bite the bullet and book the bus with the cruise line?

They are not sold out. Those are regional trains, and they do not take reservations. They also do not post the fares until about a week in advance. If you look at trains within the coming week, you'll see the fare is 6,70 euros and there are frequent trains. You'll be fine.

beware of doing this trip by train, though, it will get a decent amount of time + waiting + risking a lost connection. Unless you ship is calling all-nigh in port, i'd rather go for a closer city - like Pisa - from where, in the last case scenario, you can still rent a very exensive traxi back to port.

Thanks everyone for the advice. We know it is a 90-minute train ride (plus getting to the station and buying tickets), and we have expected that type of hassle. Fortunately, the ship is arriving at 07:00 and leaving at 20:00. It's not an overnight, but it certainly is a long time for a cruise ship for a port. We already have our reservations for both the Uffizi and Accademia (one mid morning, one mid afternoon), thanks to Rick's advice. Jason
