Train from LeHarve to Paris

Can anyone help me in various areas concerning French train travel? I need to get to Paris from LeHarve and return the next day. Which rail line (are there choices?), costs (seniors), timetables, etc. Please provide as much detail as possible. Thanks John

You can get all of the details you want by going to bahn.de for scheduling information. The bahn site is very easy to use. Or simply use the French site at sncf.com. You will have to use the sncf site to purchase a ticket. However, to keep from getting kicked to Rail Europe list your home country as England.

All trains between Le Havre (note spelling) and Paris are operated by SNCF, French National Rail. There have been some recent changes that make it easier to book in English without being bumped to Rail Europe which doesn't offer discount fares. Go to tgv-europe.com and you will get the new English version of voyages-sncf.com. Choose France as your ticket collection country. The standard 2nd class fare for direct Intercites trains between Le Havre and Paris Saint-Lazare is €33.50. If you book ASAP (up to three months allowed), you can get a Prem's fare as low as €15.00 and you can print your own tickets. Be aware that discount fare tickets are for a specific departure date and time and are non-exchangeable and non-refundable. Be sure you can commit before booking.

I am seeing different prices using the websites you suggest; also, inputting USA as my country seems to bring on extra fees. If possible, can you be more specific as to how you booked the seat for the 33.50 euro price. Thanks, John

Consult www.seat61.com for anything having to do with trains anywhere. The site has suggestions for which site to use. The current SNCF site, http://en.voyages-sncf.com/en/ is fairly intricate but does have all the data and sells the tickets, with reservations included where appropriate. The trick you refer to is simpler than it seems. Do not specify the US as your country because it leads to RailEurope where you will possibly pay more with fewer options. Instead, specify Antarctica. Don't worry; your tickets will not be mailed there. You can either print them out when purchased or pick them up in France at any station or SNCF boutique.
You will also give your age and be offered senior discounts automatically, without any enrolment or discount card.

As I said in my previous post, if you start with tgv-europe.com, you will automatically be directed to the new English version of voyages-sncf.com. You no longer have to enter a country of residence, only a ticket collection country. Choose France as that country. For any given date and departure time within the next three months you will be shown a variety of fares from discount to standard depending upon the number of seats that still are available at each price level. Here are some examples: For tomorrow, 20 August, all discount fare tickets are gone and the only 2nd class choice is the standard €33.50 ticket. Depending upon your departure time, For 4 September there are €15.00 Prem's fare tickets, €20.00 Prem's fare tickets, and €33.50 standard 2nd class fare tickets. For 20 November there are €15.00 Prem's fare tickets available for all departure times. Prem's fare tickets are for all ages and will be cheaper than any senior fare ticket. There is an allotted number of Senior fare tickets for each departure date and time. If they are available for the time you choose, they will cost you €25.20.
