My friend and I have are going to spend 5 days in Levanto. We have train tickets from Rome to La Spezia. (I got those on Rail Europe) Is it pretty easy to get train tickets from LaSpezia to Levanto. How much time do we need in-between trains. We also have thought about going up to Portofino for a day. Is that possible from Levanto?
Is there more than one train station in LaSpezia? we arrive LaSpezia Centrale.
Trains run very regularly. I've taken my groups to La Spezia by accident before (didn't get off at Riomaggiore), and we easily hopped back on the train heading north within 50 minutes or so. You can also go to Portofino.
La Spezia Centrale is the main station. There is another station named La Spezia Migliarina.
Thank you for your response to my questions regarding the trains in LaSpezia.
Do you think it best just to wait until we get to LaSpezia to purchase tickets for Levanto? I went on Trenitaliaweb site and some were booked up already. actually the scheduled train we wanted was no longer available.
Get the ticket at teh station, it is not a problem. These are local trains and run frequently. My recollection is that you need to take teh train to Santa Margaritha and get a bus from there to Portofino. Portofino is very picturesque - and very expensive - think Monte Carlo prices. It is worth a visit, even if all you do is take photos. WHen we were there there was a beautiful yacht called Lady Christina docked there. My wife's name is Christine, so she was quite impressed!
Joby,
Since no reservations are possible on regional trains, the Trenitalia site doesn't show fares for those trains more than a few days in advance. The "NA" you found on the Trenitalia site means that the fares weren't available, not that the trains were sold out. Just buy your ticket and jump on the next train. IC trains cost a little more and the ticket comes with a seat reservation.
