train from Gimmelwald to Cinque Terra

Can you get from Gimmelwald to Cinque Terra in one day by train? How long does it take. Worry about getting into Vernazza so late.

The quick answer is NO. You can't do the entire journey by train because it's impossible. Can you do the journey in a day? YES. Here's the scoop. First, it will take you just under 9hrs with 6-7 transportation changes. You're going from one hard to get to location to another. Nothing direct. From Gimmelwald, you go down the gondola to the station. Take the bus to the Lauterbrunnen train station where you take your first train to Interlaken Ost. From Interlaken Ost you will change trains in at least Spiez, Milan and Monterosso. Possibly Brig as well.

I travelled from Murren to Vernazza in one day in August 2005. It was all trains from Lauterbrunnen. Took about 8 hours.

It is possible, but whether you really want to do it, is another question. The German Rail website shows a connection, for instance, leaving Gimmelwald at 7 AM and getting to Vernazza at 15.27 (3:27 in the afternoon). It takes 8½ hours with 7 connections.

Lee is right, that it's possible and up to you to do it if you want to. On the trip I took in 2005, we were there for 19 days and the best overall routing placed the Cinque Terra right after the Swiss Bernese Oberland, so we bit the bullet and spent most of the day on the train. Still though, getting into your CT town before 4PM means you'll still get to enjoy the evening there (beautiful sunset on the Walk of Love perhaps?) and a nice meal.
