Train From Frankfurt - Trenitalia website - transportation to cruise ship

My husband and I lived in Germany when he was in the service 39 years ago. We decided to celebrate our 40th anniversary by returning to Amberg where we spent almost 2 years. We will be flying into Frankfurt and plan to take a train to Amberg - is the train station close? Should we take a taxi? Also we are want to take the night train from Munich to Rome but am having a very hard time completing the reservation on Trenitalia. Any suggestions? We will be staying in Rome for 2 days before taking a cruise. Does anyone know how we can get to the port for a reasonable price? Thanks - this site is invaluable

First, try booking your Munich to Rome journey on www.bahn.de It's the German train site. You might be able to book Rome to Munich on Trenitalia but the other way around, the German site is superior.

Second, from Rome, you can take the frequent train from Rome Termini to Civitavecchia. The local Regionale R train costs 4.50Euro. The Eurostar will cost 10Euro.

And you won't need a reservation for the regional train from Roma Termini to Civitavecchia.

Thanks for the help - I am overwhelmed! I will go with bahnhof.de for the train - trenitalia was cheaper but I heard bahnhof was more reliable. Should we stay in a hotel near the train station?

JoAnne, that's Bahn.de, not Bahnhof.de. The Bahn is a name for German Rail; Bahnhof is German for train station.

What do you mean, "Is the station close? Should we take a taxi?" Is the station close to what? Is Amberg close to FRA? The only "Amberg" I find in Germany is in Bavaria, east of Nürnberg, near the Czech border. If you take an ICE, the fastest, and most expensive, express train from FRA to Nürnberg, then a regional train to Amberg, it will still take 4-5 hours.

Or do you mean is the station in Frankfurt close to the airport? There are two rail stations at the Frankfurt airport. You walk to either of them.

I did mean is the train station close to the airport and it sounds like it is. Thank you for your explanations - it certainly helps. Amberg is near the Czech border. We will just go with the regular train. After Amberg we will go to Munich - any suggestions for an hotel?

I don't know about any hotels in Germany, but here is a website that might be helpful.

www.gtahotels.com

We booked our Rome hotel on this site for later this summer.

It has a spotting map & shows where the hotels are located in a given area.
For example, we want to stay near the Roma Termini station. It showed a bunch of hotels within a half kilometer max.

JoAnne, first, there are two air terminals in FRA. Terminal 1 is the terminal used by Lufthansa and the Star Alliance airlines. Terminal 2 is used by some other US airlines; I flew into T2 with NWA in 2000. Anyway, if your flight comes into T2, you come down concourses A, B, or C into the "great hall" of Terminal 1. There will be stairs or escalators near the streetside wall leading to a "mall" under the access road outside the terminal. The mall takes you under the road to the basement of the building across the street, which is the Regional Bahnhof (Regionalbf). From there you can catch S-Bahns and regional trains to the main station (Hauptbahnhof) in Frankfurt, 10-15 minutes away. You can also go up to the 2nd floor mezannine of Terminal 2, across a pedestrian bridge, and out an enclosed bridge to the Fern (long distance) Bahnhof, where you catch high-speed express trains to all over Germany.

If by "regular" train you mean regional trains, then you can buy local, RMV ticket to Kahl am Main in the regional Bhf for €6,75 per person. That will get you to the Frankfurt Hbf, where you will board one of the hourly Regional Express trains (it's a regional train, not an express in the ICE/IC/EC sense) to Würzburg. Also, in the Regionalbf, you buy a Bayern-Ticket, which is a €27 pass valid for unlimited travel by 2-5 people on regional trains in Bavaria for the rest of the day (Kahl am Main is the first stop in Bavaria).

So, the RMV tickets take you on the S-Bahn to the Frankfurt Hbf and from there to Kahl. At Kahl, the Bayern-Ticket becomes valid all the way to Amberg. You will have a change of trains in Würzburg and again in Nürnberg.

Does anyone know the altitude that the train climbs to from Munich to Rome. I have a blood disorder that does not allow me to go into high elevation. I will need to see a specialist in Rome and need a good route to get me there safely.

If you any insights on this your response would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
Cristiaana
