Train from Florence airport to Rome (city - not airport)

We'll arrive at the Florence airport about noon and want to travel immediately to Rome where we'll spend 3 nights before returning to Florence. So how do we get from the Florence Airport to Rome by train - fastest train, please? I'm getting a little confused by the train schedules & fares. Anyone know about how long it takes & what it costs?

sherrie, Could you confirm the airport code of your arrival airport - is it FLR or PSA? If you're arriving at FLR, use either Bus or Taxi from the airport to Firenze Santa Maria Novella station (it's the main station in Florence). When you reach the station, purchase tickets for the EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita. On those trains, travel time will be 1H:35M to Roma Termini. There are frequent departures each day, and second class fare is currently listed at €45 per person (subject to change of course). Happy travels!

Larry, thanks so much! This is precisely the information I needed. So there is no need to buy train tickets in advance on line. Good to know & much appreciated.

You might explain your schedule a bit. Most of us would wonder why you are not flying directly to Rome. Second, flying into Florence often will require a connection and most likely that connection is Rome.

Thanks so much for the information. You confirmed what I saw re: train schedule & fares on line but wasn't sure whether to trust. Our schedule is into & out of Florence essentially because our travel dates are 4/14 to 4/24 - smack in the middle of Spring break because we're taking our granddaughter who has a pretty stringent window for departing/returning. She is in Raleigh-Durham, we're in Colorado Springs & trying to coordinate schedules was a nightmare. Since we plan to spend so much time w/daytrips in Tuscany, Florence seemed a good solution AND it was the best fare we were able to get when we had to pull the trigger on the plane tickets. Would have preferred into Rome, out of Venice but it didn't work for money & schedule. This is our granddaughter's 13th birthday, rite of passage trip & she had her choice of countries. First choice was Egypt - which was planned & almost booked but her parents thought better of it last week. It's been a scramble all the way around. Thanks again for the good information. I'll be back with more questions about where/what in Tuscany.

I assume that you are flying into Amergo Vespucci airport in Florence (FLR). We've done that. No train station there that I am aware of. No customs either as you're probably flying in from another large EU airport. Two choices here. First, the ATAF Voainbus. This bus goes from the airport to the SITA bus station which is about 800' from the main Florence train station. According to their map, it does make one stop at the main Florence train station first. Second is the taxi outside the terminal. About 25E to the train station plus a euro or two for luggage. We flew into Florence and we did take the taxi to our hotel. For the fast train, there are about 55 fast Eurostars that depart Florence for Rome each day (this isn't Amtrak). Please don't purchase your ticket in advance to depart as quicly as possible. Seat reservations are required on these trains and you must be on the train noted on your ticket. If your plane is late, you can get your tickets changed but you will lose time. With 2-3 trains leaving each hour and each holding about 400 people, you won't miss your train. Just buy your tickets at the ticket machine when you arrive at the station. The machines will prompt you in English, accept your U.S. creidit card and will make your seat assignments. BTW, about 250,000 people go through the Florence train station each day. About 480,000 go through Rome Termini. The train journey is generally non-stop. It takes 1hr.35min and the fare is 45E one-way ($60).
