Does anyone have experience taking a train from the cruise ship dock in Civitavecchia to the closest station to St. Peter's Basilica? Is it realistic to walk off the ship to the train station, buy a day pass and go into the city on our own?
Yes, no such thing as a day pass, the train ride is about an hour. Put Civitavecchia into the search and you will find lots of responses.
Well, there is such a thing as a one-day pass from Civitavecchia... It's called a Biglietto Integrato Regionale Giornaliero (BIRG). Other folks call it the "Lazio Pass." This ticket allows unlimited travel on all Lazio city and regional transport, including buses, trains, (not the Fiumicino services), trams, and in Rome, the metro. It’s priced according to zones and if you buy it in Civitavecchia it will cost you €9 (as of February 2009).
So you can ride into Rome on the regional trains, then use the BIRG in Rome on all metro/bus/trams, and then ride a regional train BACK to Civitavecchia - all for €9!! This, you can ride the regional trains into San Pietro station and then walk over to St. Peters!
From personal experience- if this is your first time in Rome, I would use the ships transportation. Usually you can pay for only a bus into Rome, no sightseeing tours. This will maximize your timethere and limit the headachs of trying to get there on your own. The train station is a fair walk from teh ships docking areas. Sometimes there is a small bus that will pick you up and take you to teh station, and sometimes not!
That said, I am a huge fan of doing your own thing- most other ports in the Med are easy to do that. It is just Rome has so much to see and is not quite so easy to get there from the cruise ports. Let me know if you are going anywhere else and have questions, I have been on several Med cruises and loved them all!
Ron to the rescue. I stand corrected. Didn't know about the pass. We have made that trip four time but never a round trip in one day. Is there some way to buy the pass prior to Civitavecchia? The reason I ask from our experience when leaving the ship there will be massive lines to buy tickets to Rome especially if more than one ship is in port. The train station is about a mile straight down the beach from the port entrance. Follow the flow, lots of people going that way. There is a local bus from the port entrance to the station for a 1+E but it is will be overwhelmed by the mob.
Frank - that's a great suggestion to purchase the BIRG in advance and avoid the lines. When I head to Civitavecchia to meet folks I already HAVE my roundtrip ticket and while waiting on them, I buy theirs... But I wonder if there is a Tabacchi shop or a travel agent on your way from the port gates to the train station. Certainly a travel agent with a "FS" logo in the window would sell these. Too bad the cruise ships did not offer this service but that would certainly CUT INTO the profits they make on shore excursions. Next time I'm up that way I'll walk to the port gates from the train station and take a look!
Ciao,
Ron
Ron, we are always coming from Rome so we buy the RT ticket in Rome so it is just walk on the first train out of Civ (after properly validating the ticket !!) I didn't see any Tabacchi shop or much other commercial activity in that area. It is a very busy street on one side and the beach on the other. We probably will be in Civ this Fall and have decided not to go into Rome. Anything particularly interesting in Civitavecchia?
Am planning the same excursion from a cruise ship....If you go to www.europeportreviews.com/Rome2.htm, you will find a step by step guide from another traveller outlining exactlyhow to get to Rome and particularly which station to use for the Vatican. Its beautifully laid out and wish we had one for every port like this.
