I am traveling solo and considering taking the RER from CDG to Paris exiting at Chatelet - Les Halles. With luggage in tow (carry-on & 28" suitcase), how is this journey? I am flying Delta so my gate will probably be in Terminal 2. Will there be any stairs that will require lifting & carrying my luggage? Will I be walking for miles? I'd love to be able to save some $$$$ & take the train!!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
I would advise against taking the RER to Chatelet with a carry-on and 28" suitcase. Largest suitcase I have traveled to europe was a 24" suitcase and this was difficult as almost all the metro's require some up-down stairs. Getting through the train-metro gates can be tough with luggage.
I take it every time, but....I have a 21" suitcase and a purse. IMHO it is much harder to do the cheaper travel with a 28". Right now I am out of town on an extended business trip with a 25". I have cursed that thing several times and I would NOT take it on the RER. It can be crowded and trying to roll this monster around and get on/off etc would be a nightmare. I can't imagine even dealing with a 28" in the airport. Take a taxi. When you pack that much you have to realize there is a cost (and make sure it is not overweight. My 25" weighed 45 lbs. So it would be very easy to be overweight with a 28")
Thank you Byron & Carol for you honest opinion!! Although I probably overstated the size of my suitcase, it typically runs at least 40 lbs!! I certainly won't be lifting that thing up or down stairs or thru turnstiles!! Ugh!! It's a shared shuttle for me... Anyone with any suggestions for a reliable shared shuttle from CDG to les Halle's???
No way no how with all that luggage,, a 28 inch bag and a carrryon would be impossible. You will walk alot at Chatelet, and there may or may not be stairs, there are some elevators but who knows if they will be working, or if you will find them( its a huge hub station) . Sorry I have never taken a shuttle so can't offer names( I have done taxi, the RER( without all the luggage) and even a car service once), but do be picky, have heard alot from peole who have prepaid then had trouble with shuttle,, I would look for one you pay on boarding myself.
