We will be finishing a RS tour in Budapest in September, and we want to then go to Vienna on our own the next day. Is there more than one station that a Budapest train can go to? The reason I ask is that we want to get to the Karlsplatz Ubahn station as soon as possible (and get a hotel there), and not having too much time and not knowing Vienna at all, we want to make our initial connections as simple as possible. It seems to me that the Wien Meidling station has simpler Ubahn connections (U 1) than does the Wien West station ((U 3 to U 1). Any advice?
Ni, I stay at Westbahnhof. Both the U-6 and U-3 stop there, very advantageous. To get to Wien Meidling from Westbahnhof take the U-6 to the stop Philadelphia Brücke, then follow the signs to Meidling, very well organised. You can leave from Westbahnhof to Budapest. That train stops at Keleti pu...an interesting train station of the old school. Take the RailJet (RJ) train from Keleti pu back to Westbahnhof. I don't know if it stops first at Meidling since Westbahnhof is the terminus.
Look here for train schedules. if you type in Budapest, select the BUDAPEST* choice for all possible stations then WIEN* for all Vienna possible stations. http://elvira.mav-start.hu/elvira.dll Any reason you aren't spending any time in Budapest?
I think I can answer James question. They are already spending time in Budapest with Rick Steves tour. So the question should be "any extra time".
