Do I need to reserve train seats ahead of time? Is there a senior discount? What would the cheapest way be to get to Delft? We will be going on a major holiday (Queens Day) and expect the trains will be busy. Help!
No advance reservations needed. Check schedules at this site: http://www.nshispeed.nl/en The best routing is from Bruges to Antwerp, Antewrp to Rotterdam, Rotterdam to Delft. Total travel time is 2.5 hours, fare is 38 euros...simply purchase your tickets at the station on the day of your journey.
Excellent advice from Michael, but one slight correction- the "International Train" (that's what they call it over the loudspeaker at the stations) that travels between Brusssels and Amsterdam stops in Delft. Note that this train is not part of the high-speed Thalys service. One train leaves per hour in either direction. No reservations are necessary or possible. Go from Brugge to Antwerp and make your transfer there.
The direct "international" IC train from Brussels to Amsterdam Centraal doesn't stop in Delft anymore. After Rotterdam the IC trains transfer to the new high speed tracks which bypasses Delft. These are the only stops it makes these days: Mechelen, Antwerp, Roosendal, Dordrecht, Rotterdam, Den Haag, Schipol airport, Amsterdam CS.
Thanks for that heads up... I've always enjoyed the International train. I bet that may speed it up a few minutes (but probably not a great deal). Delft is only a few miles from Den Haag HS and should be an easy connection.
Even though Den Haag is closer to Delft than Rotterdam, its better to make the connection at Rotterdam. From the latter there are literally trains every five minutes to Delft. From Den Haag there are four trains an hour, but the spacing of those trains can get a little weird.....three of those trains may be spaced ten minutes apart, and you may have to wait 30 minutes for the fourth train.
