train from Berlin to Munich

I need advice from all you train experts. My son wants to go to Octoberfest. He is in Berlin and he said that the cheapest tickets are 158 Euros round trip. I know that there are Bavarian tickets that may be less. Any advice?

I just found RT Sparpreis 50 tickets from Berlin to Munich available online for Monday Nov 3 to Sunday Nov 9 for 109 Euro on the Bahn website.

Bayern-Tickets only cover travel in Bavaria, but if he has lots of time to take regional trains, there are also Länder-Tickets for Brandenburg and for Sachsen/Sachsen-Anhalt/Thüringen.

Brandenburg has a Brandenburg-Ticket for 1 to 5 people for €26; Thüringen, Sachsen, and Sachsen-Anhalt have one ticket for a Single for €19 and 2-5 people for €27. One ticket is valid in all three states. Bayern has a Single for €19 and 2-5 people for €27.

It will cost him €128 to get from Berlin to Munich and back using Länder tickets by himself. If he can get friends to go with him, up to five would cost €160, for all.

Now, what is he going to do for a place to stay?

Thanks Lee. It sounds like they are doing a midnight to midnight blitz--sounds crazy to me but.... It sounds like they are limited as to what is available for train transportation.

SparPreis 50 (50% discount) requires a Sat. night stayover (or all travel on Sat or all on Sunday). With the SparPreis, the first person pays half of full fare, and up to 4 Mitfährer (co-travelers) each pay half of that. SparPreis fares must be purchased three days before travel, are tied to specific trains, and are non-refundable.
